We regularly encourage periods of fasting as a church family
In such instances, please note that we are NOT asking people to fast for the entire period (e.g. 3 days, 7 days, 40 days). All that we are suggesting is that during that period you consider setting additional and purposeful time aside to seek God and pray. This could involve fasting for just one meal each day or for one day in the week or every other day. It could mean simply setting aside certain kinds of food. The details are between you and God. It doesn’t necessarily have to mean that you even fast from food; for instance, you could fast from television or a certain hobby. The important thing about fasting is to follow God’s direction and to use the time to seek Him, as opposed to simply going without food or something else.
If you are planning to fast from food for more than one day, it is recommended that you consult your doctor, especially if you have not done this before (some people may not be able to go without food for health reasons). If you have not fasted from food before, our advice is to begin with very short fasts. Remember that fasting for long periods of time does not necessarily equate to spiritual maturity. Please never go without water on a fast.
